How We Compared These Diluting and Decanting Your Own Cleaning Sprays: Five Things, One Real Certification
We split these five by how checkable their claims are, because the gap is wide. ATTITUDE and Glad are real manufacturers with published specifications, and in ATTITUDE's case with third-party credentials, EWG Verified plus a stated ISO 16128 figure, that exist independently of the listing. The other three are Amazon-brand kit with no manufacturer site, so we read their specification bullets and product detail tables directly off the live Amazon.com listing and quoted only figures stated there: wall thickness, graduation ranges, bottle dimensions, materials, counts and part numbers. We confirmed every ASIN and title against the live listing. Nothing here was used, mixed, diluted or cleaned with by us. One thing we deliberately did not do is repeat any cleaning, antibacterial or health claim for the essential oil. Peppermint oil is sold here as a fragrance, its own listing instructs you to dilute before use and to patch test for skin contact, and we have reported it as a scent additive rather than as a cleaning agent, because that is what the product documentation supports.
Diluting and Decanting Your Own Cleaning Sprays: Five Things, One Real Certification Buying Questions
What does EWG Verified actually mean?
It means the product has been reviewed against the Environmental Working Group's published criteria for ingredient disclosure and health concerns, and that the manufacturer has submitted its full formulation for that review. It is a third-party mark with public criteria, so unlike words such as natural or non-toxic, it is something you can look up and check. The ATTITUDE cleaner here carries it along with a stated 99% naturally derived figure measured under ISO 16128, which is the international standard that defines how that percentage is calculated. It is the only product on this page with a credential of that kind, and that is the main reason it leads.
Do I need graduated cylinders, or will a measuring jug do?
For a single all-purpose spray, a kitchen jug is fine. Cylinders earn their place once you are working to a ratio and the quantities get small: measuring 15 ml into a 2 oz atomiser is guesswork in a 500 ml jug and straightforward in a 25 ml cylinder, because accuracy depends on the vessel being roughly the size of what you are measuring. The Teenitor set covers 10, 25, 50, 100 and 250 ml cylinders plus beakers up to 1000 ml, which spans both ends of that problem. Keep them for cleaning products only and label them.
Does adding essential oil make a cleaner work better?
No, and we are not going to suggest otherwise. Oil is a scent additive. The cleaning is done by the surfactants in the cleaner, and the peppermint oil in this guide is sold as a fragrance product whose own listing tells you to dilute it before use and warns about direct skin contact. There is a practical reason to add it anyway, which is that a scent you chose is pleasanter than one chosen for you, and a 100 ml bottle goes a very long way at a few drops per spray. Treat any claim beyond fragrance as unsupported.
