Product overview
A capable stylus locked to a narrow device list
The Apple Pencil Pro, released in May 2024, is Apple's top-tier stylus and builds on the 2nd-generation Pencil's magnetic charging and pairing with several new hardware features: a squeeze gesture (a sensor in the barrel detects a squeeze to bring up a tool palette), barrel roll (rotating the pencil in your hand changes brush angle/shading in supported apps), haptic feedback via the Taptic Engine, and Find My integration so a lost Pencil can be located.
Critically, compatibility is narrow and worth checking before purchase: Apple Pencil Pro only works with the M4 iPad Pro (11-inch and 13-inch, 2024) and the M2/M3 iPad Air (11-inch and 13-inch, 2024) and iPad mini (A17 Pro). It does not work with the standard iPad (including the 10th Gen or A16 11th Gen models), nor with older iPad Pro/Air models that instead use the 2nd-generation Apple Pencil or the Apple Pencil (USB-C). If you're not certain which iPad you own, Apple Pencil Pro is very likely the wrong purchase — mismatched Pencil-and-iPad pairs are a common and completely avoidable return reason.
Independent reviews from outlets like Creative Bloq, Digital Camera World, Gizmodo, and iPhone J.D. have generally praised the hardware feel and gesture responsiveness, describing it as a refinement rather than reinvention of the 2nd-gen Pencil — same magnetic charging and pairing mechanism, same double-tap gesture, with squeeze, barrel roll, haptics, and Find My layered on top. Reviewer sentiment is positive but measured: several note that the new gestures are genuinely useful for artists and note-takers in apps that support them, but that casual users are unlikely to notice much difference from the 2nd-gen Pencil in day-to-day use, and none saw a compelling reason to upgrade an iPad purely to gain Pencil Pro compatibility.
App support matters more than usual with this device: the squeeze and barrel-roll gestures only function in apps that have been updated to support them (Procreate, GoodNotes, Apple's own Notes and Freeform, and a growing list of others). In apps without that support, the Pencil Pro behaves like a standard pressure- and tilt-sensitive stylus with magnetic pairing and charging — still capable, but without its signature features active.
Price is Apple's standard premium tier (typically listed around $129 at full retail, sometimes discounted), and it doesn't include a charging cable or adapter beyond the magnetic attachment to a compatible iPad's side edge. Given the narrow compatibility list and app-dependent feature set, this is a stylus best suited to owners of the specific 2024 iPad Pro/Air/mini lineup who work in apps that have added Pencil Pro support — not a universal accessory.
