We compared manufacturer specs for five current external SSDs — Samsung T9, SanDisk Extreme PRO V2, Crucial X10 Pro, WD My Passport SSD, and Kingston XS2000 — on speed, durability, and included cables.
The Samsung T9 (2TB) is the best all-around pick for most buyers: it hits 2,000MB/s in both directions, is widely compatible, and carries a 5-year warranty without costing a premium. If raw read speed for video editing matters most, the Crucial X10 Pro's rated 2,100MB/s read edges out the field, while the SanDisk Extreme PRO Portable SSD V2 is the one to reach for if the drive is going to live in a camera bag or job site. The WD My Passport SSD is the clear budget-and-simplicity option, its 1,050MB/s ceiling is meaningfully slower than the other four, and that tradeoff should be a deliberate choice, not a surprise. No candidate from the original list was dropped; all five have active, verifiable Amazon listings as of this research.

Buyer checklist
This guide is desk research, not a hands-on test: we did not purchase, connect, or benchmark any of these drives ourselves. Instead, we pulled sequential read/write speeds, interface generation, durability ratings, included accessories, and warranty terms directly from each manufacturer's own product pages and datasheets (Samsung, SanDisk/Western Digital, Crucial/Micron, Kingston) and cross-checked them against current Amazon listings and, in a couple of cases, retailer spec sheets from B&H Photo and StorageReview. Where sources disagreed on a spec, this happened with SanDisk's IP rating, we've flagged it rather than picking a number that looked better. Every speed figure below is a manufacturer-quoted maximum: hitting it in practice depends on plugging into a matching port (and using the cable that came in the box), which we explain product by product.
Yes. The 2,000MB/s-class drives here (Samsung T9, SanDisk Extreme PRO V2, Crucial X10 Pro, Kingston XS2000) need a USB 3.2 Gen 2x2 (20Gbps) port and a cable rated for that speed to hit their advertised numbers. Plug any of them into an older USB 3.0 or USB 3.2 Gen 1 (5Gbps) port, common on older laptops and cheap hubs, and you'll get a fraction of the rated speed, though the drive will still work. Always check your specific laptop or desktop's port spec before assuming you'll see the marketed number.
For everyday backup, photo libraries, and general file storage, 1TB is usually enough. If you're editing 4K/8K video, working with large RAW photo batches, or want to keep a full system image plus other files, 2TB is a safer starting point, it's also the capacity we used for the comparisons above. 4TB versions exist for all five drives if you're archiving large media libraries and don't want to juggle multiple drives.
All five are exFAT-formatted or reformattable and USB-C based, so they work with modern Macs, Windows PCs, PS5, and Xbox Series X/S out of the box for storage and playback. Recording game installs directly to an external SSD is officially supported on PS5 and Xbox Series X/S, but check each console's current storage-expansion requirements, since firmware rules occasionally change.
