How We Compared These 5 Grow Lights That Actually Fit Real Indoor Grows
This is desk research, not a hands-on test. We did not plug any of these lights in, run a PAR meter under them, or grow a single plant. What we did was pull the live or archived listing text for five grow lights, record the wattage, coverage, diode brand, efficiency figures and warranty terms each manufacturer publishes, and note the star rating and review count where an Amazon listing was actually reachable. Where it was not, we say so rather than guess.
That caveat matters more than usual in this category, because the Internet Archive (Wayback Machine) was fully offline for stretches during this research - the site returned 'Internet Archive services are temporarily offline' messages - which blocked the Amazon route for three of the five products. For the Mars Hydro TS 1000, we fetched specs and image directly from wholesale.mars-hydro.com, a Mars Hydro-operated wholesale storefront, because no Wayback snapshot of an Amazon ASIN was reachable. For the AeroGarden 45-Watt LED Grow Light Panel, we pulled the title, brand, image and feature description from AeroGarden's own grow-lights category page (SKU 970945-0100), because AeroGarden's, Home Depot's and Walmart's individual product pages all blocked automated access. For the VIVOSUN VS1000, we used VIVOSUN's own product page after multiple VIVOSUN ASIN variants returned no snapshot. None of those three entries has an Amazon star rating or review count available, and we have left those fields empty rather than invent a number.
One image substitution is worth flagging. The Spider Farmer SF1000's original landing image from the archived snapshot (asset ID 61DXJnoUswL) now returns a 404 on Amazon's live CDN - the asset appears to have been removed or rotated since the snapshot was taken. We substituted a different real, currently-live gallery image (asset ID 51IPaUYOe6L) from that same verified Amazon listing snapshot rather than link a dead image. The product, ASIN and listing text are unchanged.
A category-wide caveat: grow light specs are manufacturer-published numbers, not independently verified ones. When we write '2.5 umol/J' or '150W plus/minus 5%,' that is what the listing or the brand's own description says, not a figure we measured. Treat efficiency and coverage claims as marketing until you see a third-party test.
5 Grow Lights That Actually Fit Real Indoor Grows Buying Questions
Why do three of these five grow lights have no star rating?
Because the Internet Archive was intermittently offline during this research, we could not reach a Wayback snapshot of an Amazon listing for the Mars Hydro TS 1000, the AeroGarden 45-Watt LED Grow Light Panel or the VIVOSUN VS1000. For those three we used the manufacturer's own product page or storefront instead, and those pages do not publish Amazon star ratings or review counts. We left the fields empty rather than estimate.
What do umol/J and PPF actually mean on a grow light listing?
PPF (photosynthetic photon flux) is the total amount of usable light a fixture emits per second, measured in umol/S. PPE or efficacy (umol/J) is how much of that light you get per watt of electricity drawn. Higher efficacy generally means less heat and lower running cost for the same output. The Mars Hydro TS 1000 lists 343 umol/S PPF and 2.3 umol/J PPE; the Spider Farmer SF1000 lists 2.5 umol/J; the VIVOSUN VS1000 lists 2.75 umol/J. All three are manufacturer-published figures.
Is a 100W LED really equivalent to a 250W HPS?
Mars Hydro's own description says the TS 1000 is positioned to replace a 250W HPS light while reducing power draw by roughly 40%. That is the manufacturer's claim, not an independent measurement, and replacement equivalence depends heavily on the footprint you are trying to cover. The safer way to compare is to look at the published coverage area - 2x2 ft core for the Mars Hydro, 3x3 ft veg and 2x2 ft flower for the Spider Farmer SF1000 - and match that to your tent or shelf.
Do any of these lights include dimming or daisy-chaining?
Yes. The Spider Farmer SF1000's bullets describe a dimming knob and light switch with multi-light connection and unified dimming. The Mars Hydro TS 1000 is described as dimmable in its listing title. The VIVOSUN VS1000 lists five levels of adjustable intensity and a daisy chain (EXT) function to connect multiple lights to one outlet. The Feit Electric and AeroGarden entries do not list dimming in the feature text we retrieved.
