Product overview
Schumacher SP1298: What to Know
The SP1298 is a straightforward 12V-only charger and maintainer: 6A while actively charging, dropping to roughly 2A in maintenance mode, run through Schumacher's microprocessor-controlled multi-stage algorithm. Unlike the SC1281 it replaces in this guide, it has no jump-start or engine-boost function at all, it's built purely to charge and maintain, which fits this guide's scope better.
Schumacher's own product page states it's for 'charging Lithium ion (LiFePO4), Standard and AGM vehicle batteries,' so lithium support is explicit and consistent across Schumacher's site and the Amazon listing, there's no gel-cell mention either place, so treat gel compatibility as unconfirmed rather than assuming it's covered by 'Standard.'
The real caveat with this unit is battery size: Schumacher rates it for roughly 22-59Ah batteries and specifically advises against using it on batteries smaller than 22Ah. That's a narrower window than the other chargers in this guide, it's sized for a typical car, motorcycle, or marine starting battery, but it's not the right tool for a large deep-cycle RV/marine bank or a small powersport battery.
It also lacks a 6V mode entirely, which some competitors (NOCO GENIUS10, Battery Tender 4A, Clore PL2320) offer, if you own anything on a vintage 6V electrical system, this isn't the charger for it.
