Best Action Cameras 2026: Travel, Sports & Adventure
We compared specs, sensors and waterproofing on five current action cameras from GoPro, DJI, Insta360 and AKASO to help you pick the right one for travel, sports or diving.
Quick answer
For most travelers and weekend athletes, the GoPro HERO13 Black is the safest all-around pick because of its huge mount and accessory ecosystem, while the DJI Osmo Action 6 pulls ahead on raw image quality thanks to its larger 1/1.1" sensor and variable aperture. Creators who want in-camera AI editing and a Leica-tuned lens should look at the Insta360 Ace Pro 2. On the value side, the DJI Osmo Action 4 is now a previous-generation camera (DJI has since shipped the Osmo Action 5 Pro and Osmo Action 6) but it is still sold new and undercuts the Action 6 substantially, making it a reasonable way to get DJI's color science and stabilization for less. The AKASO Brave 7 LE remains the budget outlier of the group: it is the only camera here that is not waterproof on its own without the included dive housing, and its own spec sheets disagree on sensor size, which we disclose honestly below rather than picking a number. All five candidates from our starting list checked out as real, currently listed Amazon products, so no substitutions were necessary.

How We Compared These 5 Action Cameras Ready for Travel, Sports and Adventure
This guide is desk research, not a hands-on lab test: we did not physically shoot with any of these cameras. Instead we pulled specs directly from each manufacturer's own product and spec pages (GoPro.com, DJI.com, Insta360.com, AKASOtech.com) and cross-checked them against the live Amazon.com listings, including exact listing titles and ASINs, to confirm every camera below is a real, purchasable product as of September 2026. Where a brand's marketing copy and its own spec sheet disagreed with each other, or where DJI added a capability via a later firmware update rather than at launch, we call that out in the product write-up instead of quietly picking the more flattering number.
5 Action Cameras Ready for Travel, Sports and Adventure Buying Questions
Do these action cameras need a separate waterproof case?
It depends on the camera. The GoPro HERO13 Black, DJI Osmo Action 6, DJI Osmo Action 4 and Insta360 Ace Pro 2 are all rated waterproof on their own, without any housing, to depths ranging from about 10 to 20 meters. The AKASO Brave 7 LE is the exception: on its own it is only IPX7 splash/shallow-water resistant, and you need to use the included dive housing to take it to real snorkeling or diving depths.
Which of these has the best image quality on paper?
Sensor size is the biggest single factor, and the DJI Osmo Action 6 has the largest one here at 1/1.1", followed by the Insta360 Ace Pro 2 and DJI Osmo Action 4 at 1/1.3", then the GoPro HERO13 Black at 1/1.9". A bigger sensor generally means better low-light performance and dynamic range, but GoPro and Insta360 both apply their own color science and processing, so sensor size alone does not settle the question, we have not run a side-by-side test.
Can I use my existing GoPro mounts with a DJI or Insta360 camera?
GoPro's 2-prong folding mount is the closest thing the category has to a universal standard, and the AKASO Brave 7 LE uses the same style of mount. DJI and Insta360 use their own quick-release mount systems on the camera side, but both companies sell (and often include) adapters that let their cameras click into GoPro-style mounts, so most tripods, chest harnesses and helmet mounts remain usable across brands with the right adapter.
